Draconic Constructs

December 31st, 2010

From the Workshop Archive

Welcome again to From the Workshop, where we showcase a bevy of new magic items, monsters and even alternate class features. This week I have four different kinds of construct dragons. All dragon constructs have dragon traits.

Dragon Traits

Dragon constructs have several of the same abilities that true dragons possess.

Hit Dice (Ex): Dragon constructs have d12 hit dice unlike other constructs, which have d10.

Powerful Bite (Ex): This is a primary attack that deals the indicated damage plus 1-1/2 times the dragon's Strength bonus (even though it has more than one attack). A dragon's bite attack has reach as if the creature were one size category larger (+10 feet for Colossal dragons).

Breath Weapon (Su): Using a breath weapon is a standard action. A dragon can use its breath weapon once every 1d4+1 rounds, even if it possesses more than one breath weapon. A breath weapon always starts at an intersection adjacent to the dragon and extends in a direction of the dragon's choice. Breath weapons come in two shapes, lines and cones, whose areas vary with the dragon's size. If a breath weapon deals damage, those caught in the area can attempt Reflex saves to take half damage. The save DC against a breath weapon is Constitution-based and includes a +2 racial bonus. Saves against various breath weapons use the same DC; the type of saving throw is noted in the variety descriptions. A dragon can use its breath weapon when it is grappling or being grappled.

Dragon Senses (Ex): Dragons have darkvision 120 ft. and blindsense 60 ft. They see four times as well as a human in dim light and twice as well in normal light.

Powerful Wings (Ex): Dragon constructs get their Strength modifier to Fly checks in addition to their Dexterity modifier.

Steamwork Dragon

Steamwork Dragon

Steam Burst (Ex) When first reduced to 50 hit points or less, a steamwork dragon’s main boiler ruptures, releasing a blast of hot steam. All creatures (excluding the steamwork dragon) within a 10-foot burst take 10d6 points of fire damage; a DC 17 Reflex save halves the damage. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +2 racial bonus. Until the steamwork dragon’s main boiler is repaired it moves at half speed and can no longer use its breath weapon.

Construction
A steamwork dragon's body is sculpted from 5,000 pounds of iron, smelted with rare tinctures costing at least 1,000 gp.

Steamwork Dragon

Clockwork Dragon

Clockwork Dragon

Delicate Mechanisms (Ex): For every 30 points of damage inflicted on clockwork dragon, it takes a cumulative penalty to its AC, attack rolls, damage rolls, and the d6 of its breath weapon. The penalty is -1 to AC and attack rolls, -2 to melee damage rolls, and its breath weapon decreases by 1d6.

Construction
A clockwork dragon's body is sculpted from 5,000 pounds of iron, smelted with rare tinctures costing at least 1,500 gp.

 CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Construct, animate object, fly, geas/quest, creator must be caster level 11th; Skill Craft (armor) or Craft (weapons) DC 16; Cost 21,500 gp

Dragonflesh Golem

Dragonflesh Golem

Breath Weapon (Su): Due to the golem being made up of multiple different kinds of dragon, its breath weapon’s energy is determined randomly. Roll a d%; 1-30 fire, 31-60 cold, 61-80 acid, 81-100 electricity.

Berserk (Ex): When a dragonflesh golem enters combat, there is a cumulative 1% chance each round that its elemental spirit breaks free and the golem goes berserk. The uncontrolled golem goes on a rampage, attacking the nearest living creature or smashing some object smaller than itself if no creature is within reach, then moving on to spread more destruction. The golem's creator, if within 60 feet, can try to regain control by speaking firmly and persuasively to the golem, which requires a DC 19 Charisma check. It takes 1 minute of inactivity by the golem to reset the golem's berserk chance to 0%.

Immunity to Magic (Ex): A dragonflesh golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.

A magical attack that deals cold or fire damage slows a dragonflesh golem (as the slow spell) for 2d6 rounds (no save).

A magical attack that deals electricity damage breaks any slow effect on the golem and  heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points of damage the attack would otherwise deal. If the amount of healing would cause the golem to exceed its full normal hit points, it gains any excess as temporary hit points. A dragonflesh golem gets no saving throw against attacks that deal electricity damage.

Construction
The pieces of a dragonflesh golem must come from normal dragon corpses that have not decayed significantly. Assembly requires a minimum of six different bodies—one for each limb, the torso (including head), and the brain. In some cases, more bodies may be necessary. Special unguents and bindings worth 8,000 gp are also required. Note that creating a flesh golem requires casting a spell with the evil descriptor.

 CONSTRUCTION

Lightning Dragon Golem

Lightning Dragon Golem

Electrified Body (Su): A lightning dragon golem’s natural attacks deal an additional 1d6 electricity and creatures that hit it with natural attacks or metal non-reach weapons take 1d6 electricity damage.

Immunity to Magic (Ex): A lightning dragon golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.

A magical attack that deals electricity damage heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points of damage the attack would otherwise deal. If the amount of healing would cause the golem to exceed its full normal hit points, it gains any excess as temporary hit points. The golem gets no saving throw against attacks that deal electricity damage.

A lightning dragon's body is sculpted from 15,000 pounds of iron and 5,000 pounds of mithral smelted with rare tinctures costing at least 20,000 gp.
