Valkyries

            Hello everyone and welcome back to From the Workshop where every week we endeavor to bring you some new little feature to improve your game.  This week we have called the mythical Valkyrie straight out of the poetic Edda for your gaming enjoyment.  The Valkyries presented here are outsiders who serve warrior deities, and they perform three basic roles in their service, and as such there are three different kinds of Valkyries who are particularly well suited to one of each of their primary roles. 

            First are the Gunnr Valkyries who serve as the battle maidens of their deities and can be often seen at the fore front of their deity’s intrests on the material plane.  The Gunnr Valkyries are often seen on the material plane typically while performing an epic quest for their deity.  Gunnr Valkyries appear as beautiful statuesque women, with large feathery wings the color of iron, and are only rarely found without a shield and a short spear in hand.  Gunnr Valkyries are fierce fighters even against overwhelming odds and typically fight to the death.

            Second are the Skulda Valkyries whose primary role is in the selection of the honored dead to bear service to their deities in the next life.  Typically one can find a Skulda Valkyrie in the midst of the aftermath of the great battles of the world, but it is not uncommon to find a Skulda Valkyrie, accompanying particularly skilled and devout warriors as either a lover or boon companion.  A skulda Valkyrie, appears as a statuesque human woman of exceptional beauty save for her sleek feathery wings of metallic silver She carries a shield and sword into combat and is capable of bestowing the gift of immortality on dying warriors in exchange for service to her deity.

            Finally are the Herfjotur Valkyries who serve as the personal attendants of their deities.  Herfjotur are only encountered in their deity’s realm, and are always in positions of great honor within those realms.  A Herfjorur is a creature of awe inspiring beauty, and grace, appearing as human woman with shining skin and piecing blue eyes a Herfjotur also sports feathery wings of metallic gold.  When called to defend her Deity’s home a Herfjotur is a feircome opponent wielding a spear in one hand and a hammer of war in the other.

Sense Death (Ex): A Gunnr Valkyrie can sense those about to die within a 20’ and is aware of all dying creatures within that distance.

Smite Coward (Su): Once per day per four hit dice the Valkyrie possesses she may choose to make a smite attack against a shaken, frightened, or panicked foe, gaining a bonus to damage equal to her hit dice, on this attack.  If the attack misses the attempt is wasted.

Otherworldly Strike (Su): A Valkyrie adds her charisma bonus to all her damage rolls

Awesome Gaze (Su): As a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity a Gunnr Valkyrie can force any target she can see to make a will save (DC 17) or become shaken for 1 minuet.
