You Can Take it With You

From the Workshop Archive

Welcome again to From the Workshop, where we showcase a bevy of new magic items, monsters and even alternate class features. About a year ago I wrote an article that provided a number of quasi‑magical meals and drinks, and shortly after that Alex wrote another article providing even more magical meals. So I thought I would come up with several magic items which go nicely with these magical meals, as well as a few items that are great for crafters and cooks in general.

The portable items (such as the portable alchemist’s lab and the portable foundry, but not the climate controlled portable storage) shrink down in order to fit inside their travel forms, and, as such, they will continue to function even if placed in an extradimensional space.

Climate Controlled Portable Storage

This item functions as a portable hole, except it is a door (that can only be placed on a flat vertical surface, such as a wall) instead of a circle of cloth. The door stands 10 feet tall and is 6 feet wide and can be folded up into a 12 inch x 8 inch plank. Unfolding and refolding the door requires 1 minute. The extradimensional space that the door leads to is 10 feet wide and 15 feet deep and contains numerous shelves along each of its walls. The climate of this extradimensional space can be adjusted to its owner’s liking. While the door is unfolded and on a wall but is still closed, the space’s climate can be adjusted; the temperature can be set to anything from 0° F to 110° F; the humidity can also be adjusted, as well as whether or not the space is provided with fresh air. If the space is set to provide air, it can sustain any number of creatures that can fit within the space.

Overflowing Tankard of Ale

This ordinary looking clay tankard can hold up to 16 ounces (1 pint) of liquid and weighs 1 lb. when full. When the holder speaks the tankard’s command work, the tankard fills up with an alcoholic beverage of the holder’s choice. This beverage can’t cost more than 20 gp for 1 pint (for example, an 8-ounce bottle of fine wine costs on average 10 gp, so one pint of fine wine would cost 20 gp and the tankard would be able to replicate it), though in some cases the tankard can conjure watered-down versions of the beverage (at GM’s discretion).

Additionally, there is a version of the overflowing tankard of ale which functions just like a decanter of endless water, except that it creates the same type of alcoholic beverages that the overflowing tankard of ale can create instead of just creating water. This “decanter of endless ale” costs 12,000 gp instead of the 9,000 gp that the regular decanter of endless water costs.

There is a more expensive version of the overflowing tankard of ale that can create a single serving of anyone magical or non-magical alcoholic beverage once per day on command. The beverage created can’t be worth more than 1,000 gp. This more expensive version of the overflowing tankard of ale costs 8,000 gp.

Portable Alchemist’s Laboratory

This small, 6-inch iron cube can transform into a fully functional laboratory stocked with everything an alchemist needs. The item is activated with a full-round action and transformation takes 1 minute. This laboratory grants those that use it a +10 competence bonus on all Craft (alchemy) skill checks, as well as a +5 competence bonus on Spellcraft checks made to create magical oils, potions, and elixirs.  The laboratory can create a wide range of items commonly used in alchemy and potion crafting; all you have to do is provide the lab with gp equal to the cost of the ingredients you would need, and the lab synthesizes up those ingredients (this only works for common ingredients; the distinction of what is rare and what is common is up to the discretion of the GM). The laboratory can remain transformed indefinitely. When the laboratory is transformed, it requires at least 40 square feet of room.

Additionally, the time required to craft items with this laboratory is cut in half. The decrease to the required time applies to both mundane and magical items created through the use of this item.

Portable Brewery

This small, 6-inch iron cube can transform into a mini-brewery, stocked with all the equipment needed to brew beer. The item is activated with a full-round action and transformation takes 1 minute.  This brewery grants those that use it a +10 competence bonus on all Profession (brewer) skill checks, as well as a +5 competence bonus on Spellcraft checks made to make alcoholic magic items. All drinks prepared in this brewery are automatically purified as per the spell purify food and drink and any poisons in the ingredients are detoxified as per the spell neutralize poison (use the creator’s caster level); additionally, all drinks brewed in the brewery act as an antitoxin, granting the consumer a +5 alchemical bonus on Fortitude saving throws against poison for 1 hour. The brewery can remain transformed indefinitely and the brewing process is unhindered by the brewery being transformed back into its travel form (the brewery can contain and produce up to 200 gallons of beer). When the brewery is transformed it requires at least 40 square feet of room. Additionally, the time required to brew alcoholic items with this brewery is cut in half. The decrease to the required time applies to both mundane and magical items created through the use of this item.

The forge can remain transformed indefinitely. When the foundry is transformed it requires at least 30 square feet of room. Portable Kitchen

This small, 6-inch iron cube can transform into a kitchen, stocked with the finest cookware and utensils as well as containing a powerful oven capable of cooking or baking just about anything you can fit in it, and a sink capable of creating gallons of water. The item is activated with a full-round action and transformation takes 1 minute.  This kitchen grants those that use it a +10 competence bonus on all Profession (cook) skill checks as well as a +5 competence bonus on Spellcraft checks made to make edible magic items. All food prepared in this kitchen is automatically purified as per the spell purify food and drink and any poisons in the food are detoxified as per the spell neutralize poison (use the creator’s caster level); additionally, all food prepared in the kitchen acts as an antitoxin, granting the consumer a +5 alchemical bonus on Fortitude saving throws against poison for 1 hour. The prepared food loses these antitoxin properties after one hour. The kitchen can remain transformed indefinitely. When the kitchen is transformed it requires at least 20 square feet of room. Additionally, the time required to cook in or craft meals or items in this kitchen is cut in half. The decrease to the required time applies to both mundane and magical items created through the use of this item.

Satchel of Never-Ending Ingredients

This backpack-sized satchel appears empty, but when you concentrate on a specific cooking recipe, it will contain the exact amount of each of that recipe’s ingredients (no one ingredient may be worth more than 50 gp). The ingredients spoil if they aren’t used within 1 hour of being removed from the satchel. These ingredients look and taste exactly like they ideally would taste. The satchel ceases to function when a foreign item (something that wasn’t conjured up by the satchel) is placed inside it.
