Grave Plots Archive

Hello everyone and welcome back to another exciting Grave Plots, where we bring you new plots each and every week.  Now, I know that sometimes as DMs we run into situations where, for whatever reason, it comes time start work on the next adventure and we find that we have no idea what it is we want to do.  Maybe its come time for a filler adventure in your campaign, maybe you have writer’s block, or maybe your players finished the previous adventure a lot quicker than you expected and are begging to keep playing;, whatever the case, this week’s Grave Plots is for that moment, when you really need some idea, any idea, to get you rolling on creating your next DMing masterpiece.

Below you will find a random table of adventure ideas and plot hooks. Simply roll a d20 (or pick whichever one strikes your fancy), add imagination and a collection of encounters appropriate to the PCs level, stir well and serve.

1

A dangerous criminal has just been pardoned without explanation by the local governor; while many suspect the governor has been compromised, none can prove it and the people fear that, unless something is done, guilty criminals will forever escape justice.

2

Rumors of a werewolf in town are causing a serious panic. The situation only gets worse as bodies begin pile up in the wake of a series of gruesome murders.

3

Following a meteor shower that surprised even the most sagacious of astronomers, the warlike peoples of the north have become suddenly and inexplicably inactive, prompting a number of expeditions into that savage region.

4

The PCs have been arrested for a serious crime; regardless of their guilt, their only hope of surviving the ordeal is a notoriously corrupt jury trial.

5

Since the arrival of an old woman in a small, out-of-the-way farming village, the animals have all turned feral and, what’s worse, there seems to be little anyone can do about it.

6

The baron has been assassinated, apparently by the grand duke’s daughter.  The gorgeous youth now finds herself in the midst of a deadly political scandal, in desperate search of anyone who can help her navigate this mire.

7

Recently the inhabitants of a wealthy, but politically insignificant, city have begun to see strange shapes moving about in their mirrors; the local wizard believes he may have found a way to travel to the mirror world and investigate.

8

Following an encounter with an unusual faerie a week ago, the PCs’ dreams have been realized in the waking world.  Now each of the PCs is beginning to experience horrible nightmares that may just be the greatest test of their heroics.

9

A rakshasa has started a cult devoted to himself which, by offering a slew of earthly pleasures, has begun to turn people away from the established religions. This has caused the local priesthoods to begin aggressively asserting their religious authority, endangering the welfare of the people caught in the middle.

10

The king of the trolls has suddenly begun to make war on the humans who call the Troll Swamp their home.  Lacking any desire for diplomacy, the two factions have begun to annihilate one another.

11

A coven of witches has become active in the woods nearby to town, performing dark rituals that frighten the townsfolk and provoke the fury of the local mayor.  In these troubled times a number of children have suddenly gone missing, and the tragedy is being used as an excuse to attack the coven.

12

A merry ghost has begun following the PCs, pestering them in a good-natured fashion.  Regardless of how the PCs might try to convince the ghost, he simply will not leave them alone until the PCs put his soul to rest.

13

A discount alchemist has begun to sell potions that poison the user, and despite protests, he refuses to alter his formulae for economic reasons.  To make matters worse, his legitimate competitors have been forced by local trade laws to charge like rates, driving them out of business.

14

A tribe of giants regularly takes a tribute from the surrounding villages and townships, demanding a share of their food, wealth, and slaves.  As is common practice in those townships, these slaves are often taken from a stock of foreign visitors drawn by the lure of exotic but dangerous natural phenomena.  Recently, an adventurous princess has been taken as part of this tribute and her family has decided to mount an expedition to rescue her.

15

A cult of vampires has begun to terrorize the king’s city; the organization has ties to a popular dissident movement demanding sweeping social changes in exchange for ending the reign of terror.

16

By way of strange magic, the PCs have switched bodies with one another and if they don’t find a way to reverse the effect before midnight on the new moon, they’re going to be stuck like that forever.

17

An evil doppelganger has replaced the king and is actively trying to incite a civil war in the king’s former land.  The archbishop alone is aware of the plot, and with the whereabouts of the king unknown, it falls to the cleric and his allies to save the kingdom from a downward spiral into ruin.

18

A dragon has begun marauding in the kingdom, and while most authorities seem to think that this is simply nature taking its course and that the only real way to deal with this threat is to slay the dragon, a respected archdruid and known seer believes that there is more going on than meets the eye, and that the proper course is to solve the problem at its root.

19

Pirates recently attacked a seaside town of moderate size, sacking it utterly.  Strangely, the lord governor seems less interested in the welfare of his people than in the disappearance of a silver pendant belonging to his niece, which disappeared during the attack.

20

Suddenly and without explanation, the outside world forgets about the existence of the PCs, referring to them by different names, and remembering with perfect clarity events involving them that never transpired.  After weeks of this strange behavior, a mysterious figure who calls the PCs by there true names offers to explain what’s going on in exchange for a favor.

Well, I hope you find this table useful whenever you find yourself in need of a quick adventure idea, and if you find yourself in need something more in depth, scope out the rest of Grave Plots, where we provide you with new plot hooks and adventure ideas each and every week!  Until next week (when I believe we will be talking about devils), allow me to wish you all the best in your gaming endeavors.
