Masters and Minions Archive

Welcome again to Masters and Minions, where I strive to give you interesting NPCs and encounters that can be placed easily into your game. This week’s encounter is with Saladreila, a bralani paladin of freedom, who is now on the run with Tomas, a human commoner, she liberated from wrongful imprisonment and execution. Tomas is charged with the murders of his wife and five kids and four of his neighbors. Kalgor the Faceless, a particularly cruel doggelganger who enjoys ruining other people’s lives; his favorite way of accomplishing this, is to frame them for murder or another terrible crime.

There is currently a 2,500 gp bounty for the capture of Tomas and his elven accomplice. PCs that are able to track Saladreila and Tomas are greeted warmly by Saladreila. If the PCs don’t attack them immediately, Saladreila tries to explain to the PCs that Tomas is actually a victim and not guilty of the crimes he is charged with. She also tells the PCs about similar murders that have been happening in the area, she explains that she would have investigated them herself but she has been too busy guarding Tomas. Investigating those murders eventually causes Kalgor to try to kill the PCs before they track him down.

You can find paladin of freedom in this From the Workshop.

Tomas is a first level human commoner.

Saladreila’s Tactics
She prefers to solve problems without violence but if threatened she will attempt to subdue the PCs. If she is unable to subdue she will reluctantly use lethal force. She gladly accepts pleas for surrender by the PCs.

Kalgor the Faceless’ Tactics
He tries to use his change shape ability and his glamered armor to take a non-threatening appearance and take the PCs by surprise. If that doesn’t work he attacks the PCs all out. He always power attacks unless it becomes apparent that power attacking is causing him to be unable to hit his target.

 SPECIAL ABILITIES

Whirlwind Blast (Su)
When in wind form, a bralani can attack with a scouring blast of wind, dealing 3d6 points of damage in a 20-foot line (Reflex DC 21 half). The save DC is Constitution-based.

Wind Form (Su)
A bralani can shift between its humanoid body and a body made of wind and mist as a standard action. In humanoid form, it cannot fly or use its whirlwind blast. In wind form, it functions as if under the effects of a wind walk spell. It can make slam attacks and use spell-like abilities in either form. A bralani remains in one form until it chooses to assume its other form. A change in form cannot be dispelled, nor does the bralani revert to any particular form when killed (both shapes are its true form). A true seeing spell reveals both forms simultaneously.

 SPECIAL ABILITIES

Mimicry (Ex)
A doppelganger is proficient in all weapons, armor, and shields. In addition, a doppelganger can use any spell trigger or spell completion item as if the spells were on its spell list. Its caster level is equal to its racial Hit Dice.

Perfect Copy (Su)
When a doppelganger uses change shape, it can assume the appearance of specific individuals.
