Welcome again to Masters and Minions, where I strive to give you interesting NPCs and encounters that can be placed easily into your game. Since this week is Doppelganger Week, your PCs might have to worry about there being a traitor in their midst.

The doppelganger Roxrin is a skilled rogue and assassin. Roxrin was hired by an old enemy of the PCs, and his job is to kidnap one of the PCs (preferably one who is either a rogue or other stealthy class) and assume his or her identity. Once he has assumed the kidnapped PC’s identity, he is to learn the group’s secrets and subtly try to turn the group against each other.

Since Roxrin’s employer was vague with the details of what he should do with the kidnapped PC, Roxrin has left him or her alive, locked up in the dungeon of a noble – who Roxrin has also been posing as. While looked up in this dungeon, the kidnapped PC is kept just barely alive.

Roxrin’s Tactics
If Roxrin is exposed to be an imposter, he adamantly denies these accusations. If he is attacked, he tries to kill spellcasters first. If he is brought below a quarter of his hit points, he uses his scroll of teleport to escape; however, if he fails to teleport he surrenders. If the PCs bring his attitude to friendly from hostile with either Diplomacy or Intimidate (DC 24), he will reveal the identity of his employer and the location of the group’s kidnapped ally. If the PCs can bring his attitude to helpful, he offers to assassinate his former employer for only 6,000 gp (he claims that this how much he was offered to spy on them).
